Ugolino's Feast

Rodin depicts one of the most horrifying stories told in Dante's Inferno, the account of the traitorous Count Ugolino of Pisa, who was himself betrayed and locked in a tower to starve to death with four of his sons. Frozen in the ice of the ninth circle of Hell, Ugolino gnaws in rage at the skull of his betrayer. This sheet, one of several so-called Dantesque drawings by Rodin, has been related to The Gates of Hell commission, its frieze-like composition suitable for one of the bas-relief panels that Rodin originally intended for the project....
