One of Rodin’s more mysterious couplings, this sculpture’s aged figure reappears in The Helmet-Maker’s Wife (Philadelphia Museum of Art, F1929-7-26) and the reclining woman on her lap can be found in other compositions. Their relationship is unclear, and the piece has been called variously Youth Triumphant, Fate and the Convalescent, and The Grandmother’s Kiss, reminding us that Rodin did not always attach a particular meaning or narrative to his works....
